Do I Need Marijuana Addiction Treatment?

If you believe you might be in need of marijuana addiction treatment, ask yourself about your use of the drug. Do you feel that it has gotten out of control? If so, you may need marijuana addiction treatment to help you get off the drug and on the right track to your recovery.

Am I Addicted to Marijuana?

It can sometimes be hard to tell whether or not you are addicted to the drug. Sometimes, people abuse marijuana regularly and are not addicted. However, asking yourself these questions will help you get closer to the truth. Contrary to popular belief, marijuana can cause addiction and “some people get addicted to marijuana after using it for a while” (NLM). Ask yourself:

  • Do I feel unable to stop abusing marijuana on my own?
  • Have I experienced strong withdrawal symptoms when I’ve tried to stop taking the drug?
  • Do I only spend time with others who abuse marijuana or other drugs?
  • Do I become incredibly hostile when others ask me about my marijuana use?
  • Do I neglect my responsibilities in order to smoke more of the drug?
  • Do I neglect my own health in order to smoke more of the drug (ex. forget to eat, sleep, or take care of myself)?
  • Have I experienced major problems in my life as a result of marijuana abuse, such as:
    • Loss of job?
    • Suffering grades, suspension, or expulsion?
    • Relationship problems or breakups?
    • Family problems or falling out?
    • Legal issues?
  • Would I be willing to commit a dangerous or harmful act in order to obtain or smoke marijuana?
  • Am I unhappy unless I am smoking?

If you answered yes to many of these questions, you more than likely need marijuana addiction treatment. Addiction takes over your life and affects all aspects of it. You will need help if this occurs in your life, as it becomes difficult to stop on your own at this point.

Am I in Danger of Becoming Addicted to Marijuana?

You may need treatment to help you stop abusing the drug if you are in danger of becoming addicted. This can be just as beneficial, and it can make treatment easier as you may be experiencing fewer problems as a result of your marijuana abuse.

Treatment can help cure marijuana addiction.

As stated by the NIDA, “Estimates from research suggest that about 9 percent of users become addicted to marijuana; this number increases among those who start young (to about 17 percent, or 1 in 6) and among people who use marijuana daily (to 25-50 percent).” Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I smoke marijuana every day?
  • Have I been smoking since I was a kid or teenager?
  • Am I very secretive about my marijuana use?
  • Am I unhappy, apathetic, or otherwise burnt out as a result of my marijuana abuse?
  • Do I continue to take the drug anyway?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, there is a chance that you might be vulnerable to marijuana addiction. Consider marijuana addiction treatment as it could be beneficial to discuss your drug abuse with a therapist and to learn new coping skills before your abusive habits become a full-blown addiction.
